Her new 2010 “Dolce Vita”  Collection is stunning – I love the photographs from the campaign, which were shot in Puglia, southern Italy by photographer Matt Bird and the adorable hair and makeup look was created by Helen Hall.

This makeup look is all about a perfect, fresh looking skin, soft, smoky eyes and a soft lip colour.

Here are some product suggestions to help you re-create this look, I have chosen products from the CHANEL cosmetics range – you can purchase all of these products from www.boots.co.uk :

Use a foundation that will make your skin look healthy and flawless, without looking heavy – use CHANEL Pro Lumiere Professional Finish Makeup.

Make sure that after applying your foundation (I like to use a foundation brush), apply concealer where needed and set your makeup with a sheer dusting of loose powder.

Use a soft, pretty blusher and apply to the apple of the cheek and blend upwards and outwards. Try the CHANEL Joues Contraste Powder Blush, in shade 56 (Tea Rose)

Stephanie Allin 1 - Copy

For your eyes, choose a palette which has all of the shades you need – the CHANEL les 4 ombres de Chanel is perfect, shade 84 (Galet)will make application easy for you, apply the medium tone to your eyelid and run a small amount under the bottom lashline. Contour the socket with the darkest shade (only apply a small amount) and choose the lightest shade to apply under your brow bone as a highlighter. Make sure you blend your eyeshadows well, as the key to this look is softly blended, romantic looking eyes.

Apply a fine, black line of the CHANEL Automatic Liquid Eyeliner in black, curl your lashes and then apply a few coats of the CHANEL Immitable Waterproof Multi-Dimensional Mascara.

For lips, keep the look soft – apply the new CHANEL Rouge Coco lipstick in shade 04 Cashmere.

Get the look 3

This is a makeup look that I created last year, on a photo shoot at the Hotel Du Vin in Bristol with the fabulous photographer Rosie Parsons.

This is an example of how you can create a bridal makeup  look, using quite dramatic eyeliner on the upper lashline.

To achieve the perfect eyeliner will need come practise – however you do not need to ‘flick’ the eyeliner out at the outer corners. As this is a bridal look I finished the eyeliner just at the end of the upper lashline, which will also make it easier for you to re-create at home.

There is no eyeliner on the lower lashline, just a sweep of mascara – the drama is along the top lash line only.

If you are going to re-create this makeup look on your wedding day, it is really important to make sure that your skin is absolutely flawless and clean to the eye and that the lip colour is near to your own lip colour, just a hint of a shade darker.

If you would like to re-create this look, here is a list of key products that I used on the shoot:

1) I used skincare by Dermalogica to prepare the skin (www.dermalogica.co.uk)

2) Makeup by Daniel Sandler :

Base: Catwalk Compact Foundation
Hide It Concealer
Invisible Blotting Powder

Cheeks: Watercolour Blusher in shade Gentle

Eyes: Mineral in shade Opal on the brow bone
Sheer Satin Shadow in shade Coppered Bronze on the lid
I used ‘Rock Chick Eye Love It’ as the eyeliner
Baby Jet Mascara

Lips: High Impact Lipstick in shade Peony with Luxury Lipstick in shade Pucker layered on top

3) I used false lashes by Mister Mascara

New Brandied Bronze, Clinique’s newest Summer 2010 colour collection evokes the sexiness of hot summer days and nights. Cheeks of all skin tones are given a healthy glow without exposure to harmful rays while eyes sparkle in shades that are slightly pearlised and inspired by summertime. And, lips are kept moisturised to combat summer’s harsh heat and dryness. The look is effortless, fresh and in my opinion, perfect for a bride getting married abroad or for a bride getting married in the UK who loves a fresh, pretty look with a hint of colour.

Get the look – Stewart Parvin

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The stunning new campaign from Stewart Parvin caught my eye when I was recently looking through Brides Magazine – it is beautiful and I wanted to talk about the beautiful makeup look, as I do think it is a wearable look for brides to re-create on their wedding day.

StewartParvin08_S02_210

This beautiful campaign was shot in the Dorchester Hotel by photographer Rony Shram and this stunning makeup look was created by the wonderful Chase Aston, a makeup artist I have had the pleasure of working with in the past.

In 1996 Stewart Parvin launched his own collection and opened his Boutique in Knightsbridge. Stewart soon boasted an exclusive clientele ranging in age from 22 to 90, with many of his first season clients firm devotees a decade on. In 2000 he was asked to submit his sketches to Buckingham Palace and after immediate approval began designing some of the Queen’s most favoured outfits. He has since been commended for giving Her Majesty a fresher, lighter look and for creating some of her most eye-catching gowns to date. His work was included in the 2006 exhibition of Her Majesty’s dresses, ‘Dress for The Occasion’ at Buckingham Palace, and he was awarded an honorary fellowship of Edinburgh College of Art in their centenary year 2007. In the same year, Stewart received The Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen in recognition of his work.

StewartParvin08_S04_084

Today, Stewart has a London studio from where he designs all his pieces and keeps a close eye on the creation of each garment. He works with a small team, using only the most luxurious fabrics, fantastically creative embroiderers and seamstresses, ensuring that great care and detail is put into all of his ranges. His fame in the fashion industry comes as a direct result of this attention to detail and his unique and tastefully classic designs.

If you adore this makeup look and would love to re-create something similar for your wedding day, follow these tips:

Foundation: this look requires an immaculate, flawless medium to full coverage foundation. Try Creme de la Mer the Powder Foundation (RRP £65 www.cremedelamer.co.uk)

Cheeks: To re-create the gorgeous pink glow that the model in this campaign has on her cheeks, try M.A.C. Powder Blush in Shade Frankly Scarlet (RRP £16.50 www.maccosmetics.co.uk)

Eyes: To make this as simple as possible, keep the eyeshadow to a minimum, use a clean matte vanilla shadow all over the eye area and get the impact by taking your time to apply a flawless, black liquid eyeliner – try the Shu Uemura Liquid Liner Pen (rrp £11, www.spacenk.co.uk). Curl your lashes and apply several coats of black, waterproof mascara and if you have the confidence, apply a few individual eyelashes to the outer corner of your top eyelashes.

Lips: As you can see from the photograph, the strongest part of this look is the lips. If you love this bold look, you can apply your lipstick with a lip brush to achieve full coverage. For a softer version, you can ‘pat’ the lipstick colour onto your lips using your finger, this will give you more of a wash of colour. Try the armanisilk lipstick in shade 10 (www.giorgioarmanibeauty.co.uk)

‘Romance kissed lips’ from GUERLAIN

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Paul Costelloe Autumn/ Winter 2010

Paul Costelloe’s Autumn/ Winter Fashion Show appeared recently at London Fashion Week, at Somerset House.

pc_aw10_12

Makeup Artist Attracta Courtney created a sleek, directional look using Guerlain makeup which focused on an elongated dark smoky eye, enhanced with lashes of mascara, and combined with a flawless base and ‘romance kissed lips’.

The eye makeup may be a little too strong for a bride on her wedding day, however the ’romance kissed lips’ is definitely a look that a bride can use for her wedding day.

The Guerlain product used in this show is the Guerlain  Rouge G JEWEL LIPSTICK COMPACT in shade Gardenia (shade 02), which is a Coral Beige shade as seen on the model above.

G040819 - Rouge G - 65 Grenade - 72dpi

The compact:

Guerlain  Rouge G JEWEL LIPSTICK COMPACTis a fabulously chic compact in white gold metal. Thanks to a clever magnetic mechanism, Rouge G de Guerlain reproduces the air-releasing effect of antique powder cases. At the first click, the case reveals a mirror and then a lipstick nestled within. Upon closing, the magnets resonate with a heavy click.

This compact looks and feels luxurious and incredibly elegant – the weight of the compact makes it feel so expensive, it really is very special and unique.

The formula:

Ruby mono-crystal: When ground, this interacts with ultraviolet rays of daylight to reveal spectacular radiance. The ruby powder is all enriched with glass microbeads that diffract light.

Instantaneous and intense lip definition: Made possible  by a concentration of pigments combined with Mother-of-pearl that form an opaque film perfectly reflecting the light on the surface of the lips.

A perfectly smooth surface: Immediately smoothed, roughness and uneven areas seem to disappear. The formula contains hyaluronic acid microspheres that fill up with water and swell up to six timed their initial volume. Gugul resin acts like a natural wrinkle-filler.

Lips plumped up with targeted active ingredients: Lips are plumped up thanks to a formula with Vitamin A palmitate, which stimulates epidermal cell growth and with Tiger Grass, from Madagascar and India. The latter boosts the synthesis of collagen fibres, which are skin-plumping proteins.

Long-lasting hydration: Enriched with wild mango butter, this formula maintains optimum hydration levels. It delivers intense colour, with the comforting pleasure of a balm.

There are 25 shades for you to choose from and I adore the above shade on the London Fashion Week Catwalk (Gardenia, 02), as it is definitely a wearable shade for a bride. Not only is the formula beautiful (it feels so luxurious on the lips and the colour is gorgeous), but the compact is really special – definitely a treat for a bride to use on her wedding day.

RRP £27.

Get the look (2)

This is a makeup look that I created for a bridal photo shoot last year. It is a look that I am frequently asked to re-create for many brides on their wedding day as many brides like their eyes to be defined (this will look fabulous in your wedding photographs), along with dewy pretty cheeks and a soft pretty pink lip colour.

If you are applying your own wedding makeup, here are some tips as to how you can re-create this look yourself:

To achieve this wedding makeup look, follow these steps:

1) After using a light moisturiser, apply the Daniel Sandler Re-texturising Primer (£20 www.danielsandler.com) all over your face and using a foundation brush, apply the Daniel Sandler Super Mineral Makeup (£21, www.danielsandler.com) in a thin, even layer to your skin.

2) Using the Clinique Airbrush Concealer (£15, www.clinique.com), apply a small amount under the eyes to cover any dark circles and lighten and brighten the eye area.

3) To set your base, apply a small amount of La Prairie Translucent Powder (www.beautique.com) to your face and remember to powder your eyelids.

4) Smile on the mirror and on the apple of your cheek, apply a small amount of the Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blusher (£12 www.danielsandler.com) in shade Cherub.

5) Using the Shavata Brow Perfector (www.beautique.com), apply a matte shadow to your brows to add definition and to frame your eyes.

6) For this eye makeup look, take The Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes Kit (£21.50 www.benefit.co.uk) and apply the lightest shade on your eyelid and brow done, the medium shade in the contour of your eye and use the darkest brown shade as your eyeliner. Curl your lashes and apply a few coats of black waterproof mascara.

7) For a soft natural look to the lips, apply the CHANEL Rouge Allure Lipstick Luminous Satin Lip Colour in shade Suprise (£21) and then apply a small amout of CHANEL Levres Scintillantes Intense Radiance Lipgloss in shade Silex (£18) on top (www.boots.com)

Getting married abroad? Makeup that will withstand the heat

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Charlotte Balbier Getting married abroad7

If you are getting married abroad and are applying your own makeup, it is essential that you purchase makeup to take with you that will not only look flawless, but will also stay put in the hot weather.

I do many makeup lessons for brides who are getting married abroad – this way I can show brides how to apply their makeup and they can take the makeup with them for their wedding day. If you do not have the budget for a makeup lesson, here are some tips to help you make the right choice:

The most important thing is to get your makeup base just right. First of all, choose the right primer to go underneath your makeup. This will help your makeup stay on longer – try the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (www.qvcuk.com). Next to foundation – look for an oil free, silicone based mineral foundation (Daniel Sandler’s Super Mineral Makeup is perfect, www.danielsandler.com) this product also has an SPF to protect your skin.

Remember – if you are going to be spending a few days abroad before you get married, are you going to be sunbathing and have a slight tan? If so, you need to take this into account and maybe buy a foundation a shade darker.

Make sure you use powder to set the product and use a long lasting eyeshadow such as the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place ShadowCreme (www.boots.com) and use a black waterproof mascara to make your lashes look long and glossy.

My must have for your cheeks is the award winning Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush – a waterproof, silicone based liquid blusher that won’t budge and will give you a beautiful bridal glow – I love shade Cherub.

Keep lips moist and pretty by applying the above cheek stain in Cherub to your lips for a gentle ’stain’ to the lips and apply a little gloss on top (choose a gloss which isn’t too ’sticky’ in texture – Lancome’s Juicy Tubes Gloss is perfect).

Think light, pretty, oil free makeup which is silicone based wherever possible and you will look gorgeous and fresh on your wedding day.

Get the look – Bruce Oldfield

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

!cid_2A515503-FE57-4D8C-A351-B6C87FB9A6E8

The British couturier, Bruce Oldfield, has opened a new atelier and boutique at No.34 Beauchamp Place, London, SW3, designed as the perfect bridal destination. This one-stop wedding shop includes couture, custom-made and ready-to-wear outfits for the entire wedding party.

Bruce Oldfield, who was awarded the OBE in 1990, has been a famous name in British fashion for more than 30 years, best known for his red carpet and couture occasion-wear for Hollywood stars, British and international royalty, the European aristocracy and has designed the wedding dresses for a host of high-profile brides, including Samantha Cameron, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Jemima Khan.

A Bruce Oldfield style of glamour, sophistication, luxury, expert craftsmanship and using only the most luxurious fabrics, will ensure that any bride will look and feel amazing on that special day.

When I saw the photographs for Bruce Oldfield’s bridal collection, not only did I absolutely adore his dresses, I also loved the whole look including the makeup, which was created by makeup artist Emma O’Byrne and the photographer of the shoot was George Bamford.

If you adore the makeup look in these photographs, here are a few tips to help you re-create this look on your wedding day:

!cid_2A515503-FE57-4D8C-A351-B6C87FB9A6E8

Your foundation needs to be mid to full coverage and set with powder to achieve this flawless look to the skin. Try Diorskin Nude, Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup (RRP £28 , www.boots.com).

Cheeks are kept to a minimum, so as not to compete with the eyes and the lips. For a subtle look to the cheeks, try the Daniel Sandler Watercolour in shade Gentle (RRP £12, www.danielsandler.com).

Eyes – this look is all about the definition around the eye, as you can see in the above photograph, the model has a pretty shimmer on her eyes from the eyelid to the brow – use  Lancôme Ombre Absolue Eyeshadow in shade Moonlight , which has a 6 hour hold (£16.00 www.lancome.co.uk). To define the top lashline, use the Shu Uemura Liquid Liner Pen (£11 www.spacenk.com) and draw a line across the top lashes, getting thicker towards the outer eye, to give a lift to eye area. The, take a matte black eyeshadow from Daniel Sandler (£10 www.danielsandler.com) and using an eyeliner brush, apply the matte black shadow over the liquid liner to add intensity and then apply the matte black shadow to the lower lashline – keep it near to the route of the lashes. Apply waterproof black mascara and for even more drama, you could add some individual false lashes to the outer edge of your upper lashes.

For lips, I would use the Daniel Sandler Automatic Long Lasting Lipliner in shade Heather (RRP £9) and then apply the Luxury Lipstick in shade Entice on top (RRP £13.00 www.danielsandler.com)

Wedding day makeup tip – prime your lips!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

BBB_0048

With all of the kissing , eating and talking that you will be doing on your wedding day, it is essential that you apply your lip products perfectly. This way, your lip colour will stay on for longer and require less ‘touch ups’ during the day and will also ensure that you are ‘camera ready’ for all of those wedding day photographs!

Before you think about your lip colour and gloss, use a lip primer. This will smooth out your lips, help your lipstick stay on longer and will also help prevent your lipstick from feathering.

Here are a few recommendations for your wedding day lip primer:

COSMETICS A LA CARTE PLUMP & PRIME: CALC_Plump & Prime

Plump & Prime for lips lines, gives added volume, helps lip colour to stay in place for longer and helps prevent “feathering”. Built in moisturisers and peptides makes it a daily skincare treat for lips.

‘Maxi-Lip’ peptides boost collagen synthesis and help moisturise lips, making them firmer, smoother and better defined. Beeswax forms  a flexible, waterproof cushion, while Vitamin E keeps lips in tip top condition. Kaolin powders create a neutral, soothing canvas so lipstick stays put and colour true.

To use: Apply sparingly all over lips and over edges to smooth out fine lines before applying lip colour.

RRP £18.00 www.cosmeticsalacarte.com

DANIEL SANDLER MAGIC WAND:

DSMagicWand

Daniel Sandler’s “Magic Wand” is a long lasting line filler with a waterproof and creamy texture in an automatic pencil. It dispenses the liner easily without sharpening.

Preservative and mineral oil-free. Contains antioxidant Vitamins C and E.

Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth (and can also be used around the eyes or anywhere on the face). Can be used under makeup or apply on top of makeup to help with those deeper lines and wrinkles.

Apply on and around the lip area before applying your lipstick/ lipliner.

RRP £10, www.danielsandler.com

Top makeup tip: if you are wearing a veil on your wedding day

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Veil & gloss q&a

Many brides still love to wear a veil on their wedding day – some brides do not wear the veil over their face for the ceremony, but if you are going to cover your face when you are walking down the aisle, my top tip is to not wear a lot of lip gloss!

You can always give your lip gloss to one of your bridesmaids and after your ceremony, you can quickly apply some before the photographs.

If you apply too much gloss to your lips before the ceremony and then wear your veil over your face, there is a chance that you could get lip gloss on your veil, especially if it is a windy day!

Apply your lip liner and lipstick before you put your veil on and if you really feel that you need a little gloss, put a tiny amount on to your finger and press the gloss on to the centre of the lip. Then press your lips together a few times, so the gloss is even across your lips.

If you get gloss on to your veil, it is not easy to remove the stain and you want to look perfect for your photographs and for your groom as you make your big entrance for your ceremony, so my top tip is to go easy with the gloss and wait until after you have said ‘I do’!
