Watch behind the scenes – Madeline Isaac James Candlelit Collection 2011

GTL 3

In April, I spent two days on location at the Elvetham Hotel in Hampshire (www.elvethamhotel.co.uk) creating makeup looks for the fabulous Natalie Gladman, who is the designer of the Madeline Isaac-James Bridal Collection.

With 30 dresses to shoot over two days, it was a very intense 2 days – but with the beautiful weather (which enabled us to use the breathtaking gardens to get some amazing shots, as well as inside the main house) and with the fabulous team that I worked with, it resulted in the most divine shots for the Madeline Isaac-James 2011 Campaign.

The team that I had the pleasure of working with were: Astrid Joss (the most amazing stylist), photographer Jonathan & assistant Maike weddingsbyryan.com , hairstylist Inanch, assisted by Vessy (& Joe) from www.inanch.com, model Cristyn, PR Nicola & Craig from www.catwalkcreations.com/

As the 2011 campaign has 2 different looks, we worked on each on 2 separate days. The Candlelit Collection is very 1950’s inspired with gorgeous, full skirts and the Starlet Collection more 1920’s and 1930’s – think Hollywood glamour, slinky and elegant. The makeup and hair was very different for each collection, but the makeup look I am going to talk about first of all is the Candlelit Collection.

Watch the behind the scenes video of myself and the team creating the shoot:

As the dresses were very romantic, I created a look with flawless skin, softly defined eyes and a dewy pink cheek and lip.

Here is a list of the products that I used – so you can use the same products as I did to re-create the look for yourself. All of the products I used on this shoot are by Daniel Sandler Cosmetics (www.danielsandler.com):

Re-texturising Face Primer, all over face
Catwalk Compact Foundation, applied using Base Brush
Hide It Under Eye Concealer
Invisible Blotting Powder, applied using Contour/Powder Brush
Watercolour Blushers in shades Cherub and Lover (mixed together)
Eyeshadows in Opal (on browbone), Rosy Tan (on lid) and Charcoal Plum in the socket line.
I defined the eyes using the Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in Grey Velvet.
On the eyelashes, I used Jumbo Jet Mascara on the top lashes and Baby Jet Mascara on the bottom lashes.
On the lips, I patted on Luxury Lipstick in shade Joy and to complete the look, applied a small amount of Super Gloss in shade Super Clear.

Bigger, brighter eyes in an instant from Clinique – fall trend 2010

Clinique

Clinique brings the eyes into focus with it’s ‘Bigger, brighter Eyes in an instant’ Fall 2010 Colour Collection, proven to brighten and intensify eyes whatever your shade or shape. It is available at Clinique Counters nationwide now.

As most brides request that I enhance their eyes on their wedding day when I ask them about the style of makeup that they would like, I thought I would tell you about this new collection.

untitledIf you are applying your own wedding makeup, this is an easy way to achieve pretty eyes. The Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo colours are in ultra-flattering colour duos which can be used together to shade, highlight, line and contour, creating a multitude of looks.

To create your personal eye makeup look using the Clinique Fall 2010 Colour Collection, follow these steps:

Blend Quick Eyes Cream Shadow all over lids, from lashline to brow bone. Apply the light shade of Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo on lower lids only, from inner to outer corner of eyes. Use the dark shade to contour along the crease, from midpoint to outer corner.

Line your eyes using the Limited Edition Quickliner for Eyes Intense - the extra creamy new formulation glides on smooth and intensifies the eyes for up to 12 hours.

Next, curl your lashes and apply the Limited Edition High Impact Mascara – this deep black shade creates the necessary contrast against the whites of the eyes to create a youthful, vibrant look.

Blinc eye brow mousse – for perfect brows that won’t rub off……

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Many ladies tell me that they don’t use an eyebrow colour through their brows, as in the past they have experienced products which ‘rub off’ throughout the day (being left with half a brow never looks great)! I think this is a real shame, as I really am passionate about women having good shape brows, as the brows frame your eyes.

When applying makeup for a bride on her wedding day, I will always define her eyebrows as it looks stunning in the wedding photographs.

If using pencils/ powder with a brush doesn’t appeal to you, then try blinc eye brow mousse (RRP £16.50) which was invented to to give enhancing, water-resistant and moisturising colour to your brows with anti-ageing benefits to the underlying skin.

Brow Mousse 4 HR

Once applied, blinc eyebrow mousse fills in sparse areas to create the perfect brow line that cannot fade, run, or smudge, even if you sweat or wear it in harsh weather conditions (perfect for long lasting brows on your wedding day).

For face-framing brow colour that lasts all day long, use the product on clean, dry eyebrows. Using the applicator (which looks like a mascara wand) gently sweep across the browline in short strokes, adding colour to existing brow hairs and fill in sparse areas using the brush to give the appearance of brow hairs.

In my opinion, this is the perfect product for a bride who maybe hasn’t used a brow product before, or has used a heavy product in the past which resulted in unatural results. This product is easy to use, looks natural and you can add more product if you wish to.

It is available in 6 shades, there are details on all of the shades on the blinc website.

This makeup look is all about a perfect, fresh looking skin, soft, smoky eyes and a soft lip colour.

Here are some product suggestions to help you re-create this look, I have chosen products from the CHANEL cosmetics range – you can purchase all of these products from www.boots.co.uk :

Use a foundation that will make your skin look healthy and flawless, without looking heavy – use CHANEL Pro Lumiere Professional Finish Makeup.

Make sure that after applying your foundation (I like to use a foundation brush), apply concealer where needed and set your makeup with a sheer dusting of loose powder.

Use a soft, pretty blusher and apply to the apple of the cheek and blend upwards and outwards. Try the CHANEL Joues Contraste Powder Blush, in shade 56 (Tea Rose)

Stephanie Allin 1 - Copy

For your eyes, choose a palette which has all of the shades you need – the CHANEL les 4 ombres de Chanel is perfect, shade 84 (Galet)will make application easy for you, apply the medium tone to your eyelid and run a small amount under the bottom lashline. Contour the socket with the darkest shade (only apply a small amount) and choose the lightest shade to apply under your brow bone as a highlighter. Make sure you blend your eyeshadows well, as the key to this look is softly blended, romantic looking eyes.

Apply a fine, black line of the CHANEL Automatic Liquid Eyeliner in black, curl your lashes and then apply a few coats of the CHANEL Immitable Waterproof Multi-Dimensional Mascara.

For lips, keep the look soft – apply the new CHANEL Rouge Coco lipstick in shade 04 Cashmere.

New Estēe Lauder Sumptuous Bold Volume Waterproof Mascara

Sumptuous Waterproof Mascara

We all know that a wedding day is a happy, emotional day when most brides will cry a few (or many) tears – so a waterproof mascara is a must have item! I always use black, as I find it the most flattering colour (which also makes the white of your eyes appear whiter).

Sometimes it is hard to find a waterproof mascara that gives glossy, healthy looking black lashes as many conventional waterproof mascaras use high levels of evaporating materials to make them waterproof. While these materials provide all-terrain wear, they have a number of downsides, such as lashes that can look spiky or spindly.

Not so any more – thanks to an amazing new waterproof mascara from Estēe Lauder.

NEW Sumptuous Bold Volume™ Waterproof Mascara(RRP £18.00)– is a bold, new ultimate waterproof, long wearing mascara that delivers immediate lift and luxurious volume and curl, all in a clump-resistant, non-brittle formula. The formula’s secret lies in the use of resins, a technologically advanced polymer complex and innovative combinations of film formers for a new breed of waterproof mascara.

It is perfect for a bride (or anyone else in the bridal party), whether you are getting married here in the UK or having your wedding abroad in a humid climate.

Will also be great as a honeymoon mascara (for when you are relaxing around the pool)!

The results – this mascara gave me gorgeously full, beautifully lifted, waterproofed lashes that last!

Get the look 3

This is a makeup look that I created last year, on a photo shoot at the Hotel Du Vin in Bristol with the fabulous photographer Rosie Parsons.

This is an example of how you can create a bridal makeup  look, using quite dramatic eyeliner on the upper lashline.

To achieve the perfect eyeliner will need come practise – however you do not need to ‘flick’ the eyeliner out at the outer corners. As this is a bridal look I finished the eyeliner just at the end of the upper lashline, which will also make it easier for you to re-create at home.

There is no eyeliner on the lower lashline, just a sweep of mascara – the drama is along the top lash line only.

If you are going to re-create this makeup look on your wedding day, it is really important to make sure that your skin is absolutely flawless and clean to the eye and that the lip colour is near to your own lip colour, just a hint of a shade darker.

If you would like to re-create this look, here is a list of key products that I used on the shoot:

1) I used skincare by Dermalogica to prepare the skin (www.dermalogica.co.uk)

2) Makeup by Daniel Sandler :

Base: Catwalk Compact Foundation
Hide It Concealer
Invisible Blotting Powder

Cheeks: Watercolour Blusher in shade Gentle

Eyes: Mineral in shade Opal on the brow bone
Sheer Satin Shadow in shade Coppered Bronze on the lid
I used ‘Rock Chick Eye Love It’ as the eyeliner
Baby Jet Mascara

Lips: High Impact Lipstick in shade Peony with Luxury Lipstick in shade Pucker layered on top

3) I used false lashes by Mister Mascara

This photograph appeared on the front cover of the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Magazine – see below:

How to create beautiful brows

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

-35 - CopyOne of my beautiful brides Kelly, whose wedding makeup I applied a few weeks ago (see above and below photographs) emailed me yesterday with the following question:

“I loved my eyebrows after you did them on my wedding day, they looked 100% natural and great in the photographs. Would you be able to do a piece in your blog – a step by step guide with products etc….. I have tried and tried at home but they always look like they have been filled with powder! If you can do something in the future, I am sure that lots of people will find it useful.”

So here is my step by step guide to the exact products that I used on Kelly’s eyebrows:

After applying your base, it is important that when you powder your face, you do apply a small amount through the eyebrows, so that when you are applying your brow shadow, you are not applying it to a cream base.

I do not use pencils – I like to use a high pigment matte shadow as I find that it looks more natural than a pencil and has more staying power, which is essential for wedding day makeup. Matching the shadow to the tone and colour of your hair is essential and unless you have red hair, it is best to choose a colour which doesn’t have a red tone to it, as it can look false on your skin.

product_24

The eyebrow shadow I use is the Daniel Sandler Matte Shadow (RRP £10) and the shade I used on Kelly was tornado. This is one of my favourite shades and it does suit most dark brown hair colours. It has a rich, high-pigment, matte finish and a luxurious texture.

product_75

To apply, take the Daniel Sandler Brow Filler Brush (RRP £10), this brush is the perfect shape to create perfect brows.

Place the brush into the powder and remember to tap off the excess powder. Then, rather than drawing your brows in long strokes (maybe as you would with a pencil), gently flick the brush into your brows – almost as if you are drawing in extra hairs, just where you want them. You don’t need to press hard – keep the strokes soft.

product_76Then, to blend the shadow in so that it looks even more natural, I softly brush through the brows with the Daniel Sandler Brow Grooming Brush (RRP £5).

Wedding015

These 3 products are all you need for perfect brows – congratulations Kelly to you and your husband and thank you for your email,
Sarah x

Top tip – prime your eyelids to prevent eyeshadow creasing

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Every bride wants her makeup to look flawless from the second it is applied, to the second that you take it off after your wedding. Most brides like their eyes to be the main feature of their bridal makeup look – when I teach a bride how to apply her eye makeup for her wedding day not only do I talk about eyeshadow application techniques, I always explain the importance of using an eyeshadow primer.

If you apply your eyeshadow to a naked eyelid or an eyelid which just has foundation on it, the eyeshadow will ’slide’ into the crease of the eye and your eyeshadow will not stay perfect all day.

After I have applied foundation to the eyelid, I then like to apply (with a concealer brush) the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (RRP £11.50), which is the #1 selling product by Urban Decay.

HomePage_primerPotion

You only need a small amount and I follow this with a fine dusting of loose powder, before I start applying the eyeshadow. The great thing about this product is that not only will it prevent your eyeshadow creasing, because of the neutral colour of the product it covers any discoloration on the eyelid, so your eyeshadow will appear more vibrant and true to it’s shade.

New Brandied Bronze, Clinique’s newest Summer 2010 colour collection evokes the sexiness of hot summer days and nights. Cheeks of all skin tones are given a healthy glow without exposure to harmful rays while eyes sparkle in shades that are slightly pearlised and inspired by summertime. And, lips are kept moisturised to combat summer’s harsh heat and dryness. The look is effortless, fresh and in my opinion, perfect for a bride getting married abroad or for a bride getting married in the UK who loves a fresh, pretty look with a hint of colour.

Get the look – dramatic bridal eye makeup

Smoky get the look

This is a makeup look that I created for a bridal photo shoot. This look isn’t for every bride, it is a look which is for a bride who is used to wearing a lot of eye makeup and wants a darker, dramatic look on her wedding day.

Most brides who want a smoky eye makeup look on their wedding day tend to choose more of a softer version, but if you really want to stand out and create a dramatic eye makeup, this is how I achieved this eye makeup look:

You will need to make sure that you have applied foundation and powder to your eye area, so that you start with a clean base.

To make this look as easy as possible, buy a smoky eye kit – that way you will have all of the products that you need in one handy box for you to take to your wedding venue on the morning of your wedding (this will save you having to carry lots of separate items. Try the Too Faced Smoky Eye Kit (RRP £22.50, www.boots .com).

Get the look smoky

Using the ‘Classic Smoke’ colours in the kit, apply the lighter silver colour to the brow bone as a highlighter. Then take the darker grey satin shadow in the kit and apply to your eyelid. Make sure that you use good makeup brushes, as with smoky eye makeup the key is to make sure that you blend all of the colours well.

Next, take the darkest colour in the palette (the matte black colour) and using a small eyeshadow brush (I love the Daniel Sandler Smudger Brush, RRP £10 www.danielsandler.com) apply this dark shadow to the top and bottom lashline to make the eye makeup look more intense.

Lots of waterproof black mascara is needed for this look – make sure you curl your lashes first.

Remember if you are having a strong eye colour, use a more natural colour on the lips.
